April's Ayurveda Tip
ONE DAY A WEEK HOME CLEANSE
Namaste! In my last article, I talked about Panchakarma, the cornerstone of Ayurveda, cleansing therapy. And while costly, it is the best cleansing system because it removes not only water soluble toxins, but fat soluble toxins, which are more stubborn to dislodge from deeper tissues. So if you think of it like health insurance, it can be preventative and save you from a lot of doctor visits due to chronic diseases that can crop up, such as fibromyalgia, arthritis, colitis and many more illnesses for which western medicine cannot find relief or a cure.
Many people who take the PK plunge start to live with more awareness of their bodies and can cut doshic imbalances off at the pass. Some find that they can slowly wean themselves off of pharmaceutical drugs. We all know that when we take medication for an ailment, that it only masks the root cause, and if taken over time, is bound to affect another part of the body adversely.
So what can we do if we are not ready to experience Panchakarma?
Something you can do right now is to give your internal organs and mental state a rest. Create space for the body to heal itself and bring some balance to your mind, body and spirit. Go to the farmers market and buy organic fruits and veggies and juice them. Stock up on what you need so you don’t have to disrupt your special day.
If fasting is too harsh for you, try eating Kitchari once in the day. Kitchari can give you adequate nutrition and help your system to detoxify. It is very easy to digest and gives your gut the rest it needs. During the day drink freely detox tea made with simple coriander, cumin and fennel seeds. This is good to drink all the time, as it gently kindles and balances the digestive fire.
This once a week cleanse can put your digestion from low to optimal. And your health begins with your digestion. Ojas or vitality starts with your ability to absorb foods and thoughts. Also taking the time for yourself once a week to delve inside, take a yoga class, meditate or sit still in nature can help to put you in the right direction for something longer and stronger down the road.
Learn more about Ayurveda. There are plenty of websites geared to give you the basics. When you learn the foundation, you might start to recognize your Prakruti, your body type or what you were born with. At this point, if you start to fall in love with Ayurveda (as I did), it would be wise to seek out a practitioner to steer you in the right direction and help you to discover your Vikruti, your imbalance right now at this present moment. Then you can start to make better life and food choices.
Below you can find simple guidelines for a one-day cleanse during the week. Organic Split Mung Cleansing Kits, Abhyanga oil, Muscle Balm and Nasya, among other Ayurvedic products, can be purchased at Seaside Yoga Sanctuary in the Seaside studio for a reasonable cost. But you are welcome to use your own supplies, if you have them. Organic Split Mung is not easy to find. You can go to Sunyayurveda.blogspot.com to learn where to buy mung in bulk. I buy it 25 pounds at a time.
Here is to your health and well-being. Try this! You will notice how simple and light your body feels, even after one day. You may even want to go a second day!!!
In the morning scrape your tongue with a spoon.
DRINK A LARGE GLASS OF WARM WATER (add a squeeze of lemon to cleanse the liver)
Meditate and do yoga or some form of exercise
If you have Abhyanga Oil, massage whole body, including scalp or just use regular sesame oil that is organic then shower.
Prepare and drink Cleansing Tea freely throughout the day (this consists of equal amount of seeds of coriander, fennel and cumin) one tablespoon to quart of H20..simmer for five minutes then strain
Drink plenty of water
Prepare a large amount of green, alkalinizing juice.
If you are eating Kitchari, make sure that you fill your stomach ½ with food, ¼ with warm water and leave ¼ empty feeling in your stomach. This helps the digestion process.
Don’t eat after 7 p.m. in the night. If you feel hungry, have a large glass of water or tea.
Even though this is a gentle cleanse, it can still be taxing for the system. Taking steps to prepare and make sure you have all your ingredients. Reduce non-essential activities. Let your friends and family know your plans, and commit only to necessary tasks. Allow this time for yourself, for your body to rest and rejuvenate. Get plenty of rest. If you have difficulty sleeping, use sesame oil (Abhyanga) to massage the soles of your feet before going to bed.
