Mat Pilates Class

Taught by Blair Cronin

Pilates is based on a series of exercises created by German-born Joseph Pilates (1880-1967), which are designed to create a balance of strength and flexibility in the body. Specifically, Pilates aims to strengthen the core, lengthen the spine, increase flexibility and body awareness, and build muscle tone. Principles of Pilates are: control, precision, range of motion, breath, centering, opposition, flowing movement, and stability. Pilates practice develops strong musculature, especially focused on the core and postural muscles, to assist the skeletal system in a dynamic and powerful body, all which leads to looking and feeling good!

Students pay through Blair, $14 drop-in or 10 classes for $100. www.washboardpilates.com

Ashtanga Inspired Vinyasa

Taught by Amba Dryg

This is an Ashtanga Inspired Vinyasa class - Pranayama starts the class followed by 10 Surya Namaskara A and B. Vinyasa (movement) connects the individual postures (Asana) like pearls on a garland. The Ujjayi breath runs evenly through the movements and postures, like the thread in the centre of the garland. This sequence of breath and movement of Ashtanga yoga, according to the tradition has been practised in this way for thousands of years. Each Vinyasa is supported either by an inhalation or an exhalation. The Vinyasa is not between the Asanas, rather the Asana is between the Vinyasas. The postures are pauses in the flow of the movement. Mula Bandha- Uddiyana Bandha and Jalandhara Bandha are encouraged thoughout the practice as well as fascination- grattitude- surrender and evolution!
